2018 Awakening of the Dragons
Join in viewing this delightful annual event held at the Riverplace Marina at the Flag Circle
(At the south end of the Tom McCall Waterfront Park bowl in downtown Portland.)
This ancient Chinese Eye Dotting ceremony, “The Awakening of The Dragons,” features local and visiting dignitaries painting red dots on the eyes of the ceremonial dragon boat figure heads to officially “wake” them up and kick-off the Rose Festival Dragon Boat Race season.
This event will take place Saturday, March 31, 2018 at 12:00 noon (at Tom McCall Waterfront Park – South End).
Buddhists from the Hui Lin Temple lead this centuries old Chinese ceremony. Activities include firecrackers, drumming and Lion Dancing by the C.C.B.A. and ending with a parade of dragon boats and the Portland Fireboat spraying the traditional water cannon salute.
The Awakening of the Dragons officially begins the Portland Rose Festival Dragon Boat race season. Starting Sunday, April 1, each racing team will get three one-hour practice sessions a week with the boats to prepare for the June 9 & 10 competitions. There are three race divisions: Mixed, Women’s and High School.
Mixed Division: Ages 14 and up – 5 trophy groups
Women’s Division: Ages 14 and up – 2 trophy groups
High School Division: Ages 14 to 18 – 1 trophy group
