A Twinkling, Summer Night Downtown

One of our most popular events, the Portland General Electric/SOLVE Starlight Parade offers funky, eclectic fun for everyone. From traditional marching bands and flood-lit floats, to glow-in-the-dark umbrellas and unique hand-built entries, you’ll see the best of Portland’s diverse community groups (and surrounding Northwest region) together in one whimsical pageant.

Starlight Parade - Portland Rose Festival

The Starlight Parade continues a longtime festival tradition from the early 1900s, when illuminated floats built on electric trolley cars made their way through the city on trolley tracks. Today, participants light up the night with approximately 100 illuminated entries along a 2.25-mile route. The parade draws more than 325,000 spectators to downtown Portland, and is also broadcast live from 9:00 – 11:00 p.m. on FOX 12. Don’t miss the fun of one of the Rose Festival’s best and brightest traditions!

2014 Grand Marshal

Let’s hear a “whoop whoop” for the 2014 PGE/SOLVE Starlight Parade Grand Marshal, Bud Clark who served as Mayor of Portland from 1985 to 1992. Mayor Clark is a long-time Rose Festival fan who recreated the historical role of King Rex Oregonus for the Rose Festival Centennial in 2007. In this 30th anniversary year of Bud’s inauguration as Portland’s Mayor, we celebrate him as one of Portland’s most colorful personalities and memorable leaders.

2014 Starlight Parade Sections

The Parade kicks off by celebrating the 2014 Rose Festival theme, Making Memories presented by CareOregon. Pay special attention to the FOX 12 telecast when the Oregonian float appears carrying the three finalists in the “Search for Thelma” contest. One of these lucky young women will be chosen to portray Queen Thelma Hollingsworth in the Grand Floral Parade to celebrate the centennial of the first elected Rose Festival Queen. Also featured is the most charming memory maker of them all and everyone’s favorite mascot, the Rose Festival Clown Prince.

United in Service presented by Union Pacific proudly showcases outstanding volunteers and community spirit in the Rose City. Al Kader Shrine leads the section floating down the route on their popular flying carpet, followed by Star Wars Oregon and the Hawthorne Laughter Club who will have spectators howling as they practice their laughter yoga down the parade route.

A special section of the parade, Spirit of the West presented by Spirit Mountain Casino, revives a tradition featured in the first Rose Festival, where floats representing communities throughout the West paraded through the city. The 2014 Spirit of the West section celebrates the Northwest’s thriving communities and festivals with entries from the Molalla Buckeroo Association, Cannon Beach Chamber of Commerce, the infamous Seattle Seafair Pirates, and the Puyallup Daffodil Festival.

The Starlight Parade offers funky, eclectic fun for everyone in the Portlandia presented by Daimler section. Watch for Daimler’s impressive lead off entry, the Tranformers robot Optimus Prime truck. Following close behind and personifying the unique side of Portland are returning favorites including the Last Regiment of Syncopated Drummers, Mysti Krewe of Nimbus and FrightTown.

Celebrating ‘Clean and Green’

Thanks to the efforts of our sponsors, Portland General Electric, SOLVE and many volunteers, you’ll find this parade to be one of the cleanest in America. Before the parade begins, watch for volunteers who will be handing out bags to help keep litter and recyclables off of our streets. After the last parade entry, keep your eyes peeled for our post-parade clean up crew, filled with volunteers and professionals, who will be picking up trash to keep our streets clean.
