Rose Festival Presents Proceeds from Regence Grand Floral Walk to The Dougy Center

The Portland Rose Festival Foundation presented a $10,000 check Thursday, October 30, to The Dougy Center for Grieving Children and Families, at the Friends of The Dougy Center Annual Fall Event. The donation comes from the proceeds of the 2008 Regence Grand Floral Walk, a brand new healthy lifestyle walk introduced at this year’s Rose Festival.

“The Regence Grand Floral Walk fits very well with the Rose Festival’s mission of supporting the health and wellness of our community,” said Robert Hansen, 2009 Rose Festival board president, “and it’s an honor working with Regence to provide assistance to The Dougy Center, a nonprofit that’s becoming internationally recognized and replicated for its innovation and leadership in support of grieving children and families.”

Regence BlueCross BlueShield of Oregon teamed up with the Portland Rose Festival to introduce the Regence Grand Floral Walk, an event focused on raising the profile of the importance of health and wellness in our community. Two thousand people, including local celebrities, clowns, puppets and a marching band participated in the inaugural walk that covered the 4.2 mile parade route prior to the 2008 KeyBank Grand Floral Parade.

At this morning’s breakfast, Peggy Maguire (Regence chief of staff and Dougy Center board member) also announced that The Dougy Center will be the beneficiary of the 2009 Regence Grand Floral Walk, part of the biggest event day in the Northwest, stepping off at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, June 6, 2009.

“I am honored by the generosity of spirit shown by Regence employees and community members who attended the first annual Regence Grand Floral Walk,” said Maguire. “This new Rose Festival tradition embodies Regence’s commitment to the health of our communities. We applaud participants for showing how easy and rewarding it is to get healthy and benefit community organizations such as The Dougy Center.”

Robert Hansen, 2009 Rose Festival Board President, and Jeff Curtis, Portland Rose Festival Foundation executive director, joined Peggy Maguire to present the check at the annual breakfast event in the Governor Hotel Thursday, October 30. On hand from The Dougy Center to receive the donation was executive director, Donna Schuurman.
