Subway Icon Jared Fogle to Lead 2011 Regence Grand Floral Walk
His diet and walking exercise made him famous and put SUBWAY® on the menu for average Americans who want to get fit. And now Jared Fogle is coming to Portland as Grand Marshal of the 2011 Regence Grand Floral Walk starting at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, June 11. Now in its fourth year, the walk brings together recreational walkers and fitness fanatics to celebrate a healthy lifestyle in good company: a few hundred thousand enthusiastic fans lining the route of the Spirit Mountain Casino Grand Floral Parade. “I’ve been in Portland a couple of times before. I was here for the Eugene Marathon in 2009 and it’s really great to be back for an event like the Regence Grand Floral Walk that focuses on fitness,” said Jared. “I still walk every day. I even ran the New York City Marathon last year and that was very exciting. But in June I get to lead a few thousand walkers past a half million cheering Portlanders — and that’s going to be a blast!”
Jared Fogle was a 425-pound student at Indiana University in March 1998 when he noticed a sign at the SUBWAY® restaurant near his apartment promoting the chain’s “7 under 6″ menu: seven sandwiches with six grams of fat or less. He had a 6-inch turkey (no oil, mayo or cheese) for lunch and a 12-inch veggie sub for dinner, eating the same sandwiches every day for about a year. Combined with an exercise regimen of walking, he lost a remarkable 245 pounds — and the rest is history. Join Team Jared by submitting a photo that shows how YOU stay fit to the SUBWAY® Pic Your Fit Photo Contest. Contestants can enter for a chance to walk with Jared Fogle at the Regence Grand Floral Walk. To enter, just dress up in your favorite workout gear showing how you stay fit and take a photo of yourself in front of a SUBWAY® restaurant. Be creative and show your unique style (belly dancers, unicycle riders, runners — everyone is welcome!) Winners will walk with Jared and will be entered in a drawing for a year’s worth of subs. To enter, email photos to FitPhoto@RoseFestival.org.
