Annual Rose Building Open House is Remembering 1912
The Portland Rose Festival Foundation is opening its doors and welcoming the public to tour this national historic building at the Annual Rose Building Open House on Saturday, April 7 (1:00 – 4:00 p.m.) at 1020 SW Naito Parkway. The Royal Rosarians will start the event with a traditional rose planting ceremony, followed by self-guided historic displays tours, OREO Cookies treats and the opportunity for visitors to mingle with Living History characters while ‘Remembering 1912.’
Displays of the Rose Festival’s rich historical memorabilia will accompany remembrances of important Centennial milestones, which include: the founding of the Royal Rosarians, the right for women to vote in Oregon, the daring flight by Silas Christofferson off the roof of the Multnomah Hotel to Vancouver, the opening of Terwilliger Parkway, the installation of the first Benson bubblers, the sinking of the Titanic and even the beginning of the world’s most popular cookie, the OREO!
The Rose Building (opened in the late 1940′s as Portland’s Visitors Information Center) is now the home of the Portland Rose Festival Foundation. Built in 1948 and designed by influential architect John Yeon, this renovated office space honors Yeon’s original design. See the original Rose Festival Queen’s crown on display, tour a history of court gowns, enjoy wine tasting courtesy of Oak Knoll Winery and meet Living History characters representing the early 1900′s including “The Unsinkable” Molly Brown, Captain E.J. Smith and Silas Christofferson — as well as women from the League of Women voters.
