2016 Rose Festival Court Begins to Take Shape Following First Judging

Judging for the 2016 Rose Festival Court presented by Unitus Community Credit Union completed on Saturday, February 13, at the Providence Portland Medical Center. Of the 87 applicants that applied, 42 students qualified to compete for the final 15 princess positions. Nine juniors made the final round — including two students representing Lakeridge High School, which is making its first appearance in the Rose Festival Court Program for Metro East.

Each applicant gave a one minute introduction, plus a one minute speech to a panel of community volunteer judges. The winners of the first round returned in the afternoon for a final judging session to determine the fifteen Princess candidates who will be announced March 1 through March 18 (2016).

Junior and senior girls from class 4A to 6A schools in the tri-county area who have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher and 20 hours of verifiable community service were eligible. Candidates Inflatable Water Park represented the 13 traditional Portland Schools as well as the East Metro with students from Clackamas and East Multnomah Counties and West Metro students primarily representing Washington County schools. (Metro schools represented include: Aloha, Centennial, Century, Clackamas, Glencoe, Lake Oswego, Reynolds, Southridge, Tigard, Valley Catholic, Westview, Corbett(new), Estacada, Lakeridge(new), Metro East Web Academy, Milwaukie, Sam Barlow, Sunset, West Linn, and Wilsonville.) Participating Portland schools will conduct a school-wide vote which is good for 50% of the judging results.

Members of the 2016 Rose Festival Court receive a $3,500 scholarship generously provided by The Randall Group.

Kicking off the largest spectator event day in Oregon, the 2016 Portland Rose Festival Queen will be crowned at the Queen’s Coronation presented by Unitus Community Credit Union Saturday, June 11, at 9:15 a.m. — just before the Bank of the West Grand Floral Walk at 9:30 a.m. and the Spirit Mountain Casino Grand Floral Parade at 10:00 a.m. (For tickets to the Queen’s Coronation at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum go HERE.)
