Starlight Shines on the Blue Line for Grand Marshal
The Portland Police Bureau is Selected Grand Marshal for the 2016 Grand Floral Parade
The Portland Rose Festival announced today that the Portland Police Bureau has been selected Grand Marshal for the 2016 Portland General Electric/SOLVE Starlight Parade. Because most of the police will be working the streets that night and unable to ride in a car, the festival is asking the public to help recognize them in a unique ‘Moment of Celebration.’ At 9:50 p.m. parade tower announcers along the 2.25-mile route will count down the crowd for the largest single cheer ever heard in the Rose City.
“For every successful festival there is a strong and supportive infrastructure in city services and protection,” said Bill Poppino, Starlight Parade Chairman. “The Portland Rose Festival would not be 109 years old if not for the partnership with the Portland Police rank and file, and we want all of fans along the route to help us honor them with a loud cheer.”
The Portland Police Bureau has been protecting and serving the City of Portland since 1870. For many decades the Police Bureau has partnered with the Portland Rose Festival to assist with three parades, CityFair and the various events that make up the multi-week celebration.
“On behalf of the men and women of the Portland Police Bureau, I want to thank the Portland Rose Festival for this tremendous honor,” said Chief Lawrence P. O’Dea III. “We look forward to being a part of this more than 100-year tradition that salutes our City of Roses.”
