Saturday’s Grand Floral Parade Leads Off Oregon’s Biggest Event Weekend
The Rose Festival’s Brilliant 2017 celebration wraps up Oregon’s biggest event weekend with the biggest and grandest parade of all: The Spirit Mountain Casino Grand Floral Parade takes the streets Saturday, June 10, 2017. Rose Festival starts the day with the Queen’s Coronation presented by Unitus Community Credit Union, at 8:30 a.m. Once the Queen is announced, the big doors open for the Bank of the West Grand Floral Walk, stepping off at 9:30 a.m.
At 10:00 a.m. the Grand Floral Parade starts two hours of non-stop entertainment inside Veterans Memorial Coliseum, past live TV and out to the streets of Portland, as hundreds of thousands of fans line the four mile route in anticipation of another spectacular show! With the continuation of the popular mini-floats, the grand total for 2017 is 30 floats. Appearing is the first horse-drawn float for many years. Parade fans will get a special treat this year with the Rose Festival debut of the Red Hot Mamas dance group from Idaho. Topped off by the 2017 Grand Marshals — the 1977 NBA Champion Portland Trail Blazers.
CityFair is open for the final three days: featuring the Funtastic Traveling Shows carnival, the zany comedy of Jest in Time’s Family Fun Stage and popular Kids Zone activities. While the kids are at play, the adults can take time out in the Eastside Distilling Lounge, or catch local musical favorites at the Rose City Taphouse presented by Portland Brewing. Sunday’s RoZone concert on Bob Lanphere’s Beaverton Honda Stage is 93.1 El Ray presents Dia de la Famila.
The Rose Festival calendar is loaded this weekend with musical comedy, drag racing, Championship Rifle matches, Portland’s Best Rose Trials and the Grand Floral Float Showcase. Parade fans can get a special close up look at the great all-floral floats, as they line up along Naito Parkway following the parade. The floats will be on display Saturday from 3:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. and Sunday 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Following the public display of floats on Sunday, volunteers from the Rose Festival’s Official Charity — The Bloom Project — will meet at the float barn to retrieve flowers from Grand Floral Parade floats and other entries. These flowers will be made into bouquets to be shared with hospice and palliative care patients around the area. Additionally, the Bloom Project received a donation from Bank of the West — the Sponsor of the Grand Floral Walk — in support of the floral repurposing efforts.
