On July 30, 2020, amist the backdrop of the global pandemic, the Portland Rose Festival forged ahead and crowned its Queen!

For the first time since 1930, the Rose Festival princesses elected their own queen, and she was announced in a private ceremony at the International Rose Test Garden in Washington Park, which was kept private due to the constraints of state and county COVID-19 health restrictions.

Queen Anya Anand from Lincoln High School was saluted by Rose Festival dignitaries, then made her procession through the roses followed by her 14 masked princesses. The train of her heavy robe was carried by Rose Festival President Teri Bowles-Atherton and Grace Bledsoe, crown bearer, and Elise McRitchie, scepter bearer. The queen's plaque was laid at the Queen’s’ Walk at Washington Park. 2020 marks the first time in almost 90 years that a Rose Festival Queen was crowned in a Portland park.

The individual princesses and the crowning ceremony were featured in the Queen’s Coronation presented by Unitus Community Credit Union, an hour-long television special that aired on KPDX Fox12+ August 1 and 2, 2020. Queen Anya Anand will represent Portland and Rose Festival until the next festival, appearing on behalf of Rose Festival in events either virtual or in person, as restrictions allow.

Special thanks go to Unitus Community Credit Union, for their support of the Rose Festival Court and Coronation. We also thank our friends, the Royal Rosarians for their stewardship of Rose Festival pageantry. And we also must thank the Floral Design Institute for the beautiful bouquets!
