2010 Memorial Day
Danner Memorial Day March
Commemoration Ceremony
Video by AVLS Northwest
Join us during Memorial Weekend at the Waterfront Village as we welcome home the 41st Infantry Brigade Combat Team of the Oregon Army National Guard. Approximately 3,400 troops have been deployed to Iraq since May 2009 and return to Oregon from Iraq during May 2010, the longest deployment of Oregon National Guard troops since World War II.
Ceremonies include the Danner Memorial March and Commemoration Ceremony, speech by the commander of the 41st Brigade Colonel Dan Hokanson, a jet flyover, and 21-cannon salute. Already having received national recognition from the White House as an official National Moment of Remembrance, our Memorial Day ceremony honors our country's men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of their country.
Visit the Oregon Field of Honor featuring a magnificent display of 1,000 American flags that fills the park's south end bowl area. Organizers also anticipate a record number of presentations of the Honorable Service Medal to veterans, a free medal available to every veteran within the State of Oregon who has served in the Armed Forces of the United States of America with an honorable discharge. For information on how to apply to receive an Honorable Service Medal, please visit VeteransofOregon.com.
All visitors are encouraged to join in the activities inside the Waterfront Village including the Danner Tribute Wall. Bring your pictures, stories, fond memories and best wishes to post! Bring your old cell phones, too -- we'll be an official drop off spot for Cell Phones for Soldiers, a program that turns your old phone into a calling card, so our deployed military from Oregon and SW Washington can call their loved ones at home.
All uniformed soldiers, bands, historical re-enactors, veterans, active military and families of veterans/active military/fallen heroes are encouraged to participate.
