Welcome to the Sparkling Side of the Portland Rose Festival!
The Portland General Electric/SOLVE Starlight Parade offers funky, eclectic fun for the whole family. One of our most popular events, the parade draws more than 250,000 spectators to downtown Portland, and is also broadcast live from 9:00 - 11:00 p.m. on FOX 12.
With the wide variety of entries, we will have something for every Portlander. From traditional marching bands and flood-lit floats, to glow-in-the-dark umbrellas and hand-built entries, you'll see the best of Portland's diverse community groups and entries from the surrounding Northwest region.
2013 Grand Marshals
The 2013 Grand Marshals of the Portland General Electric/SOLVE Starlight Parade are the Portland Winterhawks, current winners of the Western Hockey League (WHL) championship (who received the Ed Chynoweth Cup trophy for ice hockey). Members of the team range in age from 16 to 20!
The Winterhawks won 5-1 over the Edmonton Oil Kings, taking Game Six of the WHL finals (Sunday, May 12). The grand marshal title is in recognition of the team's accomplishment.
2013 Parade Sections
We're lighting up the night with one of the Portland Rose Festival's brightest traditions, the Portland General Electric/SOLVE Starlight Parade! More than 250,000 spectators will stake out a spot in downtown Portland for a front row seat to this sparkling spectacle.
The Starlight Parade perpetuates an ongoing festival tradition. In the early 1900s, illuminated floats were carefully built on electric trolley cars and made their way through the city on trolley tracks. This year's parade will feature approximately 100 illuminated entries along the 2.25 mile route.
A special section of the parade, Spirit of the West presented by Spirit Mountain Casino, revives a tradition featured in the first Rose Festival, where floats representing communities throughout the West paraded through the city. The 2013 Spirit of the West section celebrates the Northwest's thriving communities and festivals with entries from the Seattle Seafair Commodores, Rhododendron Festival Association, and the Astoria Regatta Association!
The Portlandia section presented by ESCO celebrates the funky, weird and quirky entries that personify the unique side of Portland. Look for returning favorites such as the Last Regiment of Syncopated Drummers, the Mysti Krewe of Nimbus and FrightTown to be joined by newcomers including the Hawthorne Laughter Club, Rose City Rollers and the Portland Zombie Walk. Film Friendly Portland presents Grimm will also be back this year, proving that uniqueness makes Portland a great place to come and do business.
In addition to pride in its weirdness, Portland values volunteering and community spirit. United in Service presented by Union Pacific features some of the service organizations that give Portland its caring character. Entries include Multnomah County Animal Services, the National Association of Letter Carriers Brach 82, the American Red Cross, Portland Police Bureau Sunshine Division and IBEW Local 48.
Other incredible illuminated highlights include Ogopogo the friendly lake monster visiting all the way from the City of Kelowna in British Columbia and the premier of a new multi-generational dance from the BodyVox Dance Center. Stacked three tiers high, the Portland Water Spectacular will wow crowds with their show ski team formations. Floats travelling from festivals across the region include entries from the Puyallup Daffodil Festival, the Washington State Autumn Leaf Festival and more!
Celebrating 'Clean and Green'
Thanks to the efforts of our sponsors, Portland General Electric and SOLVE and many volunteers, you'll find this parade to be one of the cleanest in America. Watch before the parade for volunteers handing out bags to help keep litter and recyclables off our streets. Right after the last parade entry, keep your eyes peeled for our post-parade clean up crew -- filled with volunteers and professionals -- who pick up trash and wash our streets clean!
