2010 Pinnacle Awards Includes Gold for the Youth Silent Film Festival
In its debut year the with Portland Rose Festival, the Youth Silent Film Festival (featured in June at the Hollywood Theatre), was named the Best New Event in the world by the International Festival and Events Association. The announcement took place during IFEA’s 55th Annual Convention & Expo in St. Louis, Missouri on Wednesday, September 15, 2010. In total the Rose Festival won 15 awards this year, including recognition as one of the top three for Best Environmental Program for the 13th straight year.
The Youth Silent Film Festival — designed to engage youth in the creation and celebration of silent film — was conceived by philanthropist Jon ‘JP’ Palanuk. JP wants to offer a chance for filmmakers under the age of 20 to create a modern version of silent film, see it on the big screen with live accompaniment, win cash prizes and to raise awareness for and appreciation of the artistry of live film music.
“Our fondest wish in creating the Youth Silent Film Festival was to inspire a new generation in the art of filmmaking, and the creative process in general,” said JP (Creator and Executive Producer of the Youth Silent Film Festival). “We’re already at work preparing for the 2011 festival, and hope this award provides more inspiration and motivation for young filmmakers to create film for the upcoming competition.”

A new partnership idea with an old friend resulted in a Gold award for Best New Fundraising, with Elmer’s Restaurant’s Rose Meal promotion. For the third year in a row, the Rose Festival was singled out for Best Overall Sponsorship Program. Also for the third year in a row, staff photographer Vern Uyetake placed in the top three for Best Event Photograph with “Girl on a Sling.” (The photo is noted for capturing the Rose Festival experience in a perfect moment-in-time-expression on a child’s face, as she bounces in a bungee harness.)
