Rose Festival 2010 Has Arrived!

Welcome to the season of the Rose. For the next three weeks no matter what, the Rose Spirit happens in Portland, Oregon. With three weeks of unique fun and celebration, the 103rd Portland Rose Festival opens this Friday (May 28 at 5:00 p.m.) with a human powered vehicle parade around Waterfront Park, featuring the 2010 Rose Festival Court. Velomobiles and the AmtrakCascades┬áCharacter Clown Corps join the Festival’s newest earth-friendly promotion — the Green Men and a Little Lady — as they help open the All-American Spirit weekend at Waterfront Village.

Join the fun at Waterfront Village Friday through Monday with our All-American Spirit tribute. Headliner and BMA Blues Artist of the Year, Curtis Salgado, opens the evening celebration with a free concert at 8:00 p.m. on stage near the Salmon Springs Fountain. A ceremony including Bridge Lighting and the official re-lighting of the neon Rose Sign begins at 9:45 p.m. and Fireworks presented by Pacific Power will follow at 10:00 p.m. Following the fireworks is a special candlelight vigil at the Field of Honor American Flag display in the Waterfront bowl (near the Riverplace Marina).

Traditional fun abounds with Funtastic carnival rides for adults and young children and plenty of tasty food, including a two-foot long hot dog and an 18-inch hamburger, for the heartiest of appetites. NEW THIS YEAR is the Rose Festival coin of the realm: Souvenir tokens available for purchasing food and beverage south of the Morrison Bridge. Plus you can now bring your plastic! For the first time in Rose Festival history, credit and debit cards will be accepted at main entry gates, currency exchange stations and other locations (thanks to SwipeNow).

PDX Living Well highlights this weekend’s activities, providing health, wellness and safety information on how to improve and maintain your quality of life. Visitors can donate blood, shred important documents (thanks to EFI Secured Shredding and Recycling), sign up to be a big brother/Big Sister, donate to the Food bank, learn about fitness, meet a guide dog and learn about good animal care — just a few of the many PDX Living Well offerings!

The Waterfront Village Rose Spirit three week celebration is as easy as ABC with All-American Spirit (May 28 – May 31), followed by Barbecue & Brew (June 2 – June 6) and Circus City featuring Clown Town (June 9 – June 13). (Waterfront Village will be closed June 1, June 7 and June 8.) Fans can purchase a Rose Festival souvenir pin at participating Fred Meyer Stores, the Rose Garden Store in Washington Park or the Rose Festival office and wear it to get into the Waterfront Village FREE anytime!
