The Awakening of The Dragons Happens This Saturday!
The public is invited to view the ancient Chinese Eye Dotting Ceremony, “The Awakening of The Dragons,” tomorrow (Saturday, March 29) at 12:00 noon at the Riverplace Marina at the Flag Circle (south end of the Tom McCall Waterfront Park bowl), in downtown Portland. Both local and visiting dignitaries will paint red dots on the eyes of the ceremonial dragon boats to officially ‘wake’ them, kicking off the Portland Rose Festival Dragon Boat Race season.
Buddhists from the Hui Lin Temple lead this centuries old Chinese ceremony. Activities include firecrackers, drumming and Lion Dancing — and end with a parade of dragon boats, plus the Portland Fireboat spraying their traditional water cannon salute. Dignitaries include Portland Mayor Hales and wife Nancy, Director General Andy Chin (Taiwan Economic and Cultural Office, Seattle), President Todd Johnston and CEO Jeff Curtis (Portland Rose Festival), 2013 Rose Festival Queen Hannah Rice and Prime Minister Mark Smith (The Royal Rosarians).
