The Making of Memories at CityFair’s
Rose Festival Museum
This year’s Rose Festival Museum will be filled with both the old and the new, as we celebrate the 100th crowning of the Queen of Rosaria! The public can see memorabilia, purchase 2014 souvenir products, and peruse the winning paintings from the annual Oregon Society of Artists, Rose Festival Art Show.
As a special treat, visitors will be able to view the Royal Crown of Rosaria (from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on all three weekends, plus Memorial Day), rarely available to the public. The Crown of Rosaria was first given to the Portland Rose Festival in 1922, by the Business and Professional Women’s Club of Portland. (It was designed by Charles Pennell, a local jeweler.) The frame of the crown is made of 14-carat gold and it has a large blue zircon at its tip, plus 650 white sapphires, and seven rare pigeon-blood rubies. (This crown is only used once each year: During the crowning at the Queen’s Coronation.)
While visiting the Museum, we encourage you to vote with your pennies in our Search for Thelma contest, which runs through Friday, May 30. (You can view videos of the three finalists by visiting the Rose Festival YouTube page.) The winner will be selected by public vote in a re-creation of the original election of our first Queen. (All three finalists will ride together in the Portland General Electric/SOLVE Starlight Parade, where the winner will be announced live, on camera! This lucky girl will portray Queen Thelma Hollingsworth the following Saturday, June 7, in the Spirit Mountain Casino Grand Floral Parade, riding on The Oregonian float.) Your pennies will go to support our official charity, the Knight Cancer Challenge.
Other exciting Rose Festival memorabilia available for viewing will include photos, pennants, posters and actual vintage Court dresses! These items are hardly ever on public display, so don’t miss your chance to see them up close and personal this year!
You can view and purchase the 2014 Rose Festival souvenir poster that celebrates “100 Years of Princess Power” — picturing a unique art nouveau super-princess! The poster costs $10 and measures 11″ x 17″ (suitable for framing). These are available while supplies. Need a smaller version to keep or share with friends? But the postcard with the poster design! The 2014 Rose Festival Souvenir Pin allows everyone to participate in this year’s festival theme, “Making Memories.” Shaped like a camera with a flash made of sparkle, the pin’s center rose also transforms into a separate small pin. The pin will be available for purchase for $10, and when worn acts as a season pass into CityFair, good for unlimited gate admission to CityFair from May 23 through June 8, 2014 (normal gate admission is $7.00 daily).
And you can take a walk through Portland Rose Festival History with our photo book, by George R. Miller and the Portland Rose Festival Foundation — part of the Images of America series by Arcadia Books. Inside the pages of this book you can meet colorful Rose Festival characters like Rex Oregonus, Queen Thelma Hollingsworth and aviator Silas Christofferson, while enjoying fascinating facts and fun photos. Normally $22.99, the book will sell at the Rose Festival Museum for $20!
