Festival Selects Grand Ladies of Oregon
as Grand Marshals
This year the Rose Festival salutes Women in Leadership by honoring the two women who have served in the State of Oregon’s top elected role — Governors Barbara Roberts and Kate Brown — as Grand Marshals of the 2015 Spirit Mountain Casino Grand Floral Parade (Saturday, June 6, beginning at 10:00 a.m.). The Rose Festival salutes the leadership and statesmanship of these two women, who have helped make Oregon such a great state to live in and visit.
“I’m so honored to be joining Governor Kate Brown as Grand Marshals of Portland’s 2015 Grand Floral Parade,” said Governor Barbara Roberts. “As the only two women who share the historic role as Oregon Governors, we look forward to celebrating with Portland and with Oregon in our state’s equally historic Grand Floral Parade.”
Governor Roberts, a descendant of Oregon Trail pioneers and a fourth-generation Oregonian, served a four-year term from 1991-95, and is known for her leadership in the areas of health care, affordable housing and environmental responsibility. She has numerous academic credentials, a record of prolific nonprofit board service and is an active public speaker and author. Her memoir, Up the Capitol Steps was published in 2011.
With more than 25 years of service to Oregon, Kate Brown became Oregon’s 38th Governor in February, having served as Secretary of State since 2008. She successfully implemented an online voter registration, and streamlined business licensing, among many notable accomplishments. Brown served for 17 years in the state legislature, and in 2004, became the first woman in Oregon history to serve as Senate Majority Leader.
For more than 100 years, the Grand Floral Parade has been the crown jewel of the Portland Rose Festival. The only major parade in the country to pass through a building, offers spectacular close up views of the award winning floats, equestrian units and marching bands, as they begin the 4.2 mile route through downtown Portland.
Grand Floral Parade indoor reserved seat tickets are $30, and include the Queen’s Coronation presented by Unitus Community Credit Union, outdoor prices are $30 for premium chairs and $25 for reserved bleacher seating (all ticket purchases are subject to handling fees). Tickets are available online at www.RoseFestival.org, the Rose Quarter Box Office or charge by phone at 1.877.789.ROSE (7673).
The Portland Rose Festival Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that serves families and individuals with programs and events that promote the arts, education and volunteerism. We value environmental responsibility, diversity, patriotism and our historic & floral heritage.
