Jim Neill Memorial Museum at CityFair

Each year at CityFair, the Rose Festival Foundation displays treasures from the archives to the public.

Come and see the Crown of Rosaria, on display on select weekend afternoons! Since 1922, the Queen of Rosaria has worn a beautiful crown made of 14-carat gold filigree, featuring a blue zircon at its tip, six hundred and fifty white sapphires and eight rare pigeon-blood rubies. The crown is removed from its bullet-proof vault once every year for the official Coronation of the new Rose Festival Queen, and now you can see it up close in exquisite detail.

There will also be artifacts on display from over a century of festival history, with a special section to honor 1916 Queen Muriel Sailing (of Pendleton, Oregon), the 1916 Columbia River Highway celebration and past carnivals. This year the Museum has been renamed in honor of Jim Neill, who was a long time Director of the Rose Festival Foundation and avid collector of Rose Festival memorabilia. We are delighted to be displaying pieces donated by Jim Neill’s family and the law firm where he worked, Davis Wright Tremaine, presently on display at the Rose Festival offices on Naito Parkway.

SMART Kids Zone Reading Corner

The Portland Rose Festival is proud to support SMART (Start Making A Reader Today), who has improved the lives of Oregon’s children by promoting literacy since 1992, as the Official 2016 Charity. SMART’s unique program, blending early childhood reading support and adult mentoring, provides the one-on-one attention many at-risk children need to gain reading skills and self-confidence. The Rose Festival will honor SMART with a special KidsZone Reading Corner at CityFair, kicking off on May 27 at 5:00 p.m. for Memorial Day weekend and three consecutive weekends at Governor Tom McCall Waterfront Park (May 27-May 30, June 2-5 and June 9-12, 2016). The Kids Zone Tent will have bean bag chairs, books and be a quiet place for kids to read during the festival, with free arts and crafts as well. Celebrity Readers will come to the Reading Corner 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. each weekend day.
